City Tips
Overview: Mexico City is massive but navigable once you think in neighborhoods. Roma/Condesa is the walkable, creative heart; Centro Histórico is colonial history + museums; Polanco is polished and upscale; Coyoacán is bohemian and village-like.
Uber + metro are your lifelines. Traffic is brutal 5–8 PM, so cluster your days by area. The metro is fast, clean, and 5 pesos/ride.
Mexico City, aka CDMX (Ciudad de Mexico), sits at 2,250m elevation—expect mild headaches for 24–72 hrs. Hydrate aggressively, rest day one, and it passes. Don't drink tap water. Altitude means intense sun even on cloudy days; sunscreen is non-negotiable.
Famous for: - Tacos and street food (al pastor, barbacoa—eaten standing at taquerias).
- Aztec heritage (Templo Mayor, Museo Nacional de Antropología).
- Frida Kahlo & Diego Rivera (Casa Azul, murals citywide).
- World-class museums (Antropología, Jumex, Bellas Artes).
- Culinary innovation (Pujol, Quintonil—on par with NYC/Tokyo).
- Mezcal bars and craft cocktails.
- Colonial Centro Histórico (1,500+ historic buildings).
- Day of the Dead traditions (late Oct/early Nov).
- Bohemian Roma/Condesa (street art, art deco, indie cafés).
Transportation: **UBER** is essential—safe, cheap ($2–5/ride). Use for inter-neighborhood travel + late nights. Don't hail street taxis.
**METRO** costs 5 pesos. Great for distance. Rush hour gets packed—watch for pickpockets.
**WALKING** works within neighborhoods but not between them.
**FROM AIRPORT:** Uber ($8–12, 30–50 min) or authorized taxi.
